When working on a client’s home, sometimes you may find damages you weren’t aware of until you started working. Other times, damages are more apparent from the start. Drywall water damage is a common issue that contractors encounter in older homes or homes affected by leaks or flooding. Here are three of the top indicators that the home you’re working on has drywall water damage.
- Discoloration. If one patch of the drywall seems oddly discolored, the problem is likely water damage. Look for areas that are gray or yellowish rather than the normal white. This could indicate that water has seeped into the drywall or the structure behind it.
- Mold. Mold can only grow where moisture is present, so if you find mold growth, there’s been some sort of leak or other water issue. Mold growth is one of the most common as well as most recognizable forms of drywall water damage. It’s also hazardous to mess with, so it’s best not to linger around the mold spores too long until a professional can come out to deal with it.
- Warping. Water damaged drywall loses its rigidity over time, so be on the lookout for warping, bubbling, or any other signs that there’s moisture trapped under the surface. In addition to visual warping, water damaged drywall will typically be softer to the touch. If you touch a piece of drywall and it isn’t firm, there’s most likely water damage.
